COMMISSION YOUR UNIQUE PAINTING
A couple who love glass blowing asked me to do this painting representing their favorite pastime. I learned about the tools, how and why one would lay them out this way, and enjoyed trying to get close to that amazing hot glow, reflected here in the right forearm.
I do a lot of 3-D paintings in all shapes and sizes. This one, a piece celebrating my sister-in-law's wedding, began like most commissions: with a conversation about what's important to the client. For these two, life is fuller while making good food and sharing great wine. I let their clothing speak as well, to show more of their roots and values.
In the first months of the pandemic, the legendary k.d. lang commissioned me to do this pointillism on a cake box for auction by the Oregon Food Bank. I did several such portraits of celebrities at that time, including a few of former Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts (in the fabulous orange suit, above). The boxes held my wife Whitney's Giant Ass Cinnamon Rolls with all proceeds going to help healthcare workers and those in need.
This two-part piece hangs in a Portland, Oregon, CrossFit gym. I painted two gorgeous athletes from life as they demonstrated proper lifting form.
Sometimes clients commission me to do whatever I want. In this case, I got to do a 3-D painting of silverware reflecting me and my happy place: the studio.
What's better than a baby yawn? I love doing portraits of young kids and the fantastic faces they make.
We love our pets! It's an honor to paint that, and finding the right setting is a beautiful challenge.
